Grimsby waste tyre processing plant approved
The approval of a waste tyre processing plant in Grimsby using unlicensed technology has sparked concerns about regulatory compliance, environmental impact, and the credibility of waste-to-energy project developers. As the demand for sustainable tyre recycling grows, ensuring that new pyrolysis plants meet industry standards is critical to preventing operational failures and environmental violations.
This market report examines the risks associated with unproven project developers who attempt to use pyrolysis technology they do not own, have rights to, or license. It also considers the potential consequences for investors and policymakers and how compliant solutions can ensure a successful and sustainable future for tire recycling.
A plant that will process waste tyres has been given the go-ahead to be built on four hectares (10 acres) of land in Grimsby.
The tyre “pyrolysis” plant will have a 108-foot (33-meter) chimney and be built on vacant land at Great Coates Business Park off Energy Park Way.
Fluid Ice Family Office Ltd anticipates its facility will create about 120 jobs.
North East Lincolnshire Council granted planning approval on 8 April.
The plant is expected to process almost 25,000 tonnes of end-of-life tyres and save 60,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions a year, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.
Turning tyres into resources
It will have an internal floorspace of 7,390 sq m (80,000 sq ft) across several buildings and 52 parking spaces.
Tyre pyrolysis uses extreme heat in an oxygen-depleted environment to produce carbon black, steel, and oil, which can be reused.
Great Coates Village Council initially opposed the plans due to concerns over the impact on wildlife and possible odors.
It then changed its stance after a presentation by Fluid Ice, which has an existing factory in southern Poland.
The application, presented to the council, stated: “Currently, there are limited outlets for recycled tire products, and an excess of waste tires creates a fly-tipping problem with costs to the environment and the taxpayer.”
A construction environmental management plan, including mitigation measures for noise, vibration, and dust during construction, will be created as a condition for approval.
