MEPC 83 met at the IMO in London from 7 - 11 April 2025. The IMO Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) discusses reducing shipping’s impact on the marine environment. MEPC oversees the work of several subcommittees and influences subjects that cut across the work of several committees, covering many key regulations.

Significant outcomes from MEPC 83:
Below is a brief overview of some of the significant outcomes from MEPC 83:

Mid-term GHG reduction measures are approved as amendments to MARPOL Annex VI, expected to be adopted at the Extraordinary Session of MEPC in October 2025 for entry into force on 1 March 2027.

Phase 1 of the short-term GHG reduction measures was completed by agreeing to reduction factors for CII through 2030.

Approval of regulations to increase data transparency related to fuel oil reporting.

The adoption of amendments to the NOx Technical Code 2008 related to substantially modifying marine diesel engines and engines using multiple operational profiles.

Adoption of Amendments to the 2023 Guidelines for developing the Inventory of Hazardous Materials.

Agreement to have an Experience Building Phase for the Hong Kong Convention on the safe and environmentally sound recycling of ships.

Agreement to develop a new legally binding framework for controlling and managing ships’ biofouling to minimise the transfer of invasive aquatic species.
