Plastic waste pollution remains a critical environmental challenge, particularly in island nations like the Philippines. To address this growing issue, Klean Industries, in collaboration with RGH Systems in the Philippines, is implementing an advanced plastic pyrolysis recycling project to convert non-recyclable plastics into high-value fuels and recovered materials. By leveraging Klean’s industry-leading pyrolysis technology, this initiative aligns with global sustainability goals, reduces landfill dependency, and supports the transition to a circular economy.
The Challenge:
The Philippines is one of the world’s most significant contributors to marine plastic pollution, generating an estimated 2.7 million tons of plastic waste annually. Approximately 90% of waste in emerging economies like the Philippines is disposed of in non-regulated dumpsites, openly dumped, or burned, exacerbating air pollution and groundwater contamination. The country faces a critical lack of solid waste disposal infrastructure, with only 25% of local government units (LGUs) accessing sanitary landfills.
The World Economic Forum (WEF) report called “The New Plastics Economy: Rethinking the Future of Plastics”, it has stated “that every year at least 8 million tonnes of plastics leak into the ocean, which is equivalent to dumping the contents of one garbage truck into the ocean every minute. If no action is taken, this is expected to increase to two per minute by 2030 and four per minute by 2050. The Oceans will have more plastics than fish by 2050 if the ongoing practice of dumping plastics continues, the WEF report states.
In 2021, the Asia Development Bank (ADB) of the Philippines calculated that the Pasig River is the top contributing river of marine plastic waste, and it is in Metro Manila, a megacity located along Manila Bay. It contributes to 6.43% of plastic waste in the oceans. Also, the Philippines is a tropical country that receives high volumes of precipitation every year. Surface run-off, stormwater, and sewage due to precipitation carry the plastic debris on land to the rivers, which in turn hold the plastics to the seas and oceans. Seven of the world's top ten most plastic-polluted rivers are found in the Philippines. A total of 4,820 rivers in the Philippines emit around 356,371 million metric tons of plastic waste into the ocean annually.
Moreover, landfill space is running out, and illegal waste dumping threatens public health and the environment. The current waste management system is insufficient to handle municipal and hazardous waste, particularly medical, industrial, and electronic residuals.
In 2023, the Philippines projected daily waste generation to reach 60,640 tons daily. This indicates an increase from previous years. The projected waste generation in the Philippines is expected to continue rising, with estimates suggesting that the country will generate 23.61 million tons of solid waste in 2025.
The country also struggles with energy security, heavily relying on imported fossil fuels to meet growing demand. A sustainable and scalable waste-to-energy (WtE) solution was urgently needed to mitigate plastic pollution, reduce landfill dependency, and enhance energy security while ensuring economic feasibility.
The Solution:
ReGreen Holdings has partnered with Klean Industries to develop a state-of-the-art waste plastics-to-energy facility in the Philippines in response to pressing environmental issues. This initiative will introduce an advanced, scalable, and economically viable modular pyrolysis-based system to convert non-recyclable plastic waste into valuable energy resources.
Pyrolysis technology works by thermally decomposing plastics in an oxygen-deficient environment, producing synthetic gas, liquid fuel, and char. These products can be repurposed for industrial applications or energy generation.
This project aims to revolutionize waste management in the Philippines and showcase the economic potential of waste-to-energy (WtE) facilities. This collaboration harnesses Klean Industries' expertise in transforming waste into valuable resources to change how the country manages plastic waste and produces energy.
Key aspects of the project include:
The Outcome:
The implementation of the ReGreen Holdings-Klean Industries pyrolysis-based WtE facility has yielded multiple benefits for the Philippines:
A Model for Sustainable Development
The collaboration between ReGreen Holdings and Klean Industries serves as a model for integrating waste management and energy production. This project simultaneously addresses plastic pollution and energy shortages, demonstrating how innovative technologies can promote sustainable development in emerging economies.
The success of this project for ReGreen Holdings in the Philippines stands as a benchmark for future waste-to-energy (WtE) developments throughout Southeast Asia. By proving that WtE can be both financially viable and environmentally responsible, this project is paving the way for the broader adoption of modular pyrolysis plants. With strategic expansion and ongoing collaboration with Local Government Units (LGUs) and private-sector partners, this model has the potential to revolutionize waste management and energy production across the region.
